ClickUp Gantt Charts for Gulf Projects: Dependencies, Critical Path and Baselines That Survive Change
How ClickUp Gantt view works — scheduling, Dependencies, Milestones, critical path, slack time and baselines — and how project teams in the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait use it to keep approvals, launches and contractors on one honest timeline.
Quick answer
ClickUp Gantt view shows dated tasks as bars on a timeline at any level of the Hierarchy. You draw Dependencies between bars, mark approvals as Milestones, switch on critical path and slack time to see which delays matter, and save baselines to compare today's plan with the one you promised.
Every Gulf project manager knows the moment. The steering committee asks whether the launch date still holds, and the answer lives in three places: a spreadsheet with colour-coded cells, an email from the contractor, and the memory of whoever attended last week's meeting. Nobody can say which delay actually moves the deadline and which one is harmless.
Think of a connecting itinerary through Dubai International. Some connections have a three-hour layover; a late inbound flight there costs you nothing. Others have forty minutes, and the same delay means a missed flight. ClickUp's Gantt view makes that difference visible for your project: Dependencies are the connections, slack time is the layover, the critical path is the chain of tight connections, and a baseline is the itinerary you originally booked. This guide explains each piece, based on ClickUp's help documentation in October 2026, and how to set them up for the way projects run in the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.
What Gantt view is, and where it lives
Gantt view is one of ClickUp's standard views. You add it from the Views Bar with + View, at any level of the Hierarchy — a single List for one project, a Folder for a programme, or a whole Space for a portfolio. It can be private or pinned, and new Gantt views open on a weekly scale; you can switch to day, month, quarter, year or a flexible zoom.
Any task with a start or due date appears as a bar. Tasks without dates sit in the Gantt sidebar, where you click on the timeline next to them to schedule them, then drag the bar's ends to adjust. The sidebar mirrors your Hierarchy, so you can create Lists, tasks and subtasks without leaving the chart, and add columns for fields such as assignee, priority or a Custom Field. Bars are coloured by status by default, and you can colour them instead by priority, List or a Dropdown or Label Custom Field — useful when a client wants to see work by phase or by entity.
Dependencies: the connections in your itinerary
A Dependency says one task blocks another, or is waiting on it. In Gantt view you create one by hovering over a task, dragging from its node and dropping the line on the next task; click a line and the x icon to remove it. Dependency Relationships are available on all plans, and guests with edit or full permissions can create them too, which matters when an agency or contractor plans inside your Workspace.
Two settings turn lines into a working schedule. With the Reschedule dependencies option enabled in the view's Layout options, dragging a task moves every later task in the chain. With the Dependency Warning ClickApp on, ClickUp warns anyone who tries to close a task that is still waiting on another. One detail for template users: applying a Space, Folder or List template only keeps the Dependencies between tasks inside that template, so links to outside work must be redrawn.
Milestones for approvals, permits and launch dates
Gulf projects are shaped by dates that your team does not control: an authority permit, a client sign-off, a board meeting, a launch timed for National Day or the end of the fiscal year. Model these as Milestones. In ClickUp a Milestone is a task type, set by right-clicking a task in the Gantt sidebar or from the task type in an open task, and it appears as a diamond on the chart.
Link each Milestone to the work it depends on and to the work it unlocks. The chart then answers a question committees ask constantly: if the municipality approval slips by a week, what else moves? Keep Milestone names bilingual where your sponsors read Arabic — "Design approval · اعتماد التصميم" — so the same chart works in both meetings.
Critical path and slack time: which delays matter
Open Customize, choose Layout options, and switch on Critical path, Slack time or both. Slack time appears as a dashed bar showing how far a task can move before it affects the overall timeline — the layover. The critical path is drawn in red: ClickUp works backwards from the last task to find the chain of dependent tasks with no time gap between them, the tight connections where any delay moves the finish date.
The calculation is only as good as the links. ClickUp's documentation notes that a critical path can look shorter than expected when the chain has time gaps or missing Dependencies, and that hidden weekends can break it if the Weekends toggle is off. If only the last task turns red, check that the work before it is actually linked. Usage limits for these tools vary by plan, so confirm what your subscription includes before building your reporting around them.
Baselines: the itinerary you promised
A baseline is a snapshot of task start and end dates in a List, Folder or Space at a moment in time. Create one from Customize → Baselines → Add Baseline, and it appears under your bars so you can see what has accelerated or slipped. Several baselines can sit side by side, each with its own name and colour in a legend at the bottom right, and they are included when you export the Gantt view.
Permissions are deliberate: people with Full Edit can create, rename and delete baselines; Edit can show or hide them; Comment and View only can show, hide and export. Deleting a baseline is permanent, so keep that right with the project lead. We recommend three baselines on most Gulf projects: one at contract signature, one when the client approves a re-plan, and one before Ramadan, so the reduced working hours are explained rather than argued about.
Making the timeline respect the Gulf calendar
Gantt view greys out days outside the workweek, public holidays and organisation-wide exceptions, all taken from the Workspace work schedule. With the Skip Non-Working Days ClickApp active, scheduling calculations also avoid those dates. Because a Workspace has one work schedule, a group with a Monday–Friday office in Dubai and Sunday–Thursday teams in Doha or Kuwait City should set it to the office that owns most of the plan and add the other countries' holidays as exceptions. Personal Time Off also appears in Gantt view, so annual leave shows up against the tasks it affects.
One trap: when you drag a whole List, Folder or Space by its progress bar, or bulk-edit several tasks, ClickUp does not apply Reschedule Dependencies, Skip Non-Working Days or subtask remapping — the work lands exactly where you drop it. Check weekends and Eid dates after any bulk move. For phased work, the option to sync parent task dates with subtasks keeps each phase's bar spanning its earliest and latest subtask automatically.
Setting up a new project in six steps
This is the sequence we use with clients, and it takes about an hour for a project of fifty tasks:
- Confirm the Workspace work schedule and holidays first, so the chart starts on the right calendar.
- Create the List or Folder, add a Gantt view, and pin it for the project team.
- Enter phases as parent tasks and work as subtasks, with start and due dates, and turn on parent–subtask date syncing.
- Mark external approvals and launches as Milestones and draw Dependencies from the work that feeds them.
- Switch on critical path and slack time, and fix any gaps or missing links until the red chain makes sense.
- Save a baseline named after the contract or kickoff date, then review the chart weekly against it.
Three mistakes to avoid
These come up in almost every first Gantt rollout we review:
- Drawing bars without Dependencies. The chart looks like a plan, but nothing moves when reality does, and the critical path is meaningless.
- Re-planning without a baseline. If you move dates before saving a snapshot, the conversation about why the project slipped becomes memory against memory.
- Using the Gantt chart as the only view. Field staff update tasks in List or Board view and on mobile; the Gantt view is for planning and steering meetings, not daily data entry.
